Sea2Cradle was approved by Lloyd’s Register (LR) as Service Supplier for Inventory of Hazardous Materials

The Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) is one of the main requirements of both the Hong Kong Convention (HKC) and the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (EU SRR).

The EU SRR requires that EU-flagged vessels of 500 GT and over carry an IHM on board. When calling at EU ports, vessels from non-EU countries will also be required to carry an IHM, identifying all the hazardous materials on board. It is also required in the EU SRR that EU-flagged vessels are scrapped in an approved ship recycling facility.

For EU-flagged new buildings this means that they must have a verified IHM with a Statement of Compliance on board as from 31 December 2015 until latest by 31 December 2018.

Existing EU-flagged vessels should have a verified IHM with a Statement of Compliance on board no later than 31 December 2020. Ships that are to be recycled need to have this on board from the date when the EU list of ship recycling facilities was published (19 December 2016).

For non-EU flagged vessels that call at EU ports, it is also required to have on board a verified IHM with a Statement of Compliance no later than by 31 December 2020.

The whole set-up of the EU SRR, which also regulates the recycling of vessels, is to direct ships to recycling facilities that practice safe and environmentally sound methods of dismantling vessels, instead of using sites that practice beaching methods by which the environment as well as the workers are not or ill protected.
